The Unintentional Second Career That Gives Back
It wasn't supposed to start out this way--at least not in the way a business is normally launched. However it started, it is here--and here to stay for the long haul. After many years of working successfully in the nonprofit sector, I was very unexpectedly laid off from the job I deeply loved. I'll always miss it, and even more so, miss those I worked with and who, without they or I realizing it, brought me to this Unintentional Second Career That Gives Back.
Generally speaking, second careers start after retirement or for older students who've returned to college. Unexpected job loss caused the launch of my second career here at Twin Tiers Media Solutions. The mission of the agency drives me to rise each morning and do what I do with the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning. What I do here is exciting (it's not "work", it's not a "job"--it is a passion)...but what's been far more exciting has been the encouragement and support from the public and their offers of assistance. Some would say that's good old fashioned networking at its best. A willingness to help out in whatever way possible, be it time or talent and even benevolence from others. This is the spirit of volunteerism at its best, as well.
I've always been a philanthropist and volunteer at heart for all of my adult life, no matter what good cause had to be supported. If there's time available and a way to get there, you'll find me doing what I can to support the troops, raise funds to fight hunger and holiday gifts for underprivileged children, and a myriad of other activities to do what I can to contribute for the betterment of the community. Loving to learn new things and going where I've never gone before, taking risks for the advancement of personal development as well, has put me on an ever-enlightening path to accidental, non-intentional entrepreneurship.
Today, this unintentional career I have is all because of one repetitive request heard prior to the layoff......which was, "What else is there to do around our area?" Once the stage was set to provide that information (this website), the response was overwhelming and encouraging. And, here we are! I am personally grateful to those individuals and businesses who ask, without our request, how they can help out. In a time of economic downward spiral, it is amazing how folks come together to support a worthwhile project such as this. These individuals have given back in meaningful ways that have contributed to the success of our mission and growth of our work. Thank You! Isn't it ironic how, sometimes, one kindness paid forward multiplies as it rolls on from individual to another?
Thank you, everyone, for your gifts of time and talent to support our mission to raise the visibility and awareness of the Corridors. Every little thing (even forwarding our newsletter or events calendar to a friend) helps another business or person learn about opportunities in our regional area.
Sincerely,
Julie M. Ellis, Founder and Publisher, TwinTiersBusiness.com
