Did you ever drive down a country road just to see where it goes or attend an event in a far off locale to take a break from the daily routine?  We like to do that, too!   Meeting new people and enjoying a day away from the office is alot of what life's all about for many folks.  Many times you'll read about an event or location that piques your interest, and voila, you decide to hit the road, right?

Out & About is just that......where some of our readers and staff have visited, and they'd like to share their sojourn with you.  Feel free to grab a cup of java, relax for awhile and read about some of the little known or undiscovered places and events along the Twin Tiers Corridors.....

Not Too Far From Pennsylvania Route 6...........

Picture of the Austin DamThe Austin Dam located just outside the village of Austin, Pennsylvania in Potter County is a short drive from the village of Sweden Valley.  The dam broke in 1911 rushing 265 million gallons of water downriver causing massive loss of life and widespread destruction.  The site was converted to a memorial park in recent years by volunteers offering primitive camping, picnic areas and a pavillion.

To learn more about the park, visit. www.austindam.net.  Hiking, picnicing and primitive camping lots are available for enjoyment by everyone. Picture of the Austin Dam

A Stinkin' Good Time at the Cuba Garlic Festival

Picture of Garlic Princesses

Each September in Cuba, New York, you'll find a one-of-a-kind  festival that celebrates the most UNtypical theme, and that is garlic!  While most festival themes this time of year are of the apple and grape harvest, September seems to be the month for garlic in Cuba.  Curious to know more, the Event Staff headed out to learn just what takes place at this special event.  The first to greet us were the King and Queen of the Garlic Festival and then on to the Garlic Princesses, dressed as, you guessed it--cloves of garlic.

The Garlic Seed Foundation located in Rose, New York was created in 1984 "over our love of good garlic food and desire to find profitable crops and production for small and family farms".  To that end the Foundation provides services such as educational materials, informational seminars and many other activites relative to garlic.

At Empire City Farms and in its sixth year, the Garlic Festival continues to grow with the assistance of many individuals, organizations and the Cuba Chamber of Commerce.  Event goers enjoyed continuous musical entertainment of different genres of music with the smell of cooked garlic foods wafting through the mid day breeze while strolling just about anywhere through the venue.  We met folks from distances of more than 150 miles away who enjoyed the smell of garlic and the variety of vendors on hand such as the Allegany Artisans.  The Artisans, we learned, are planning for the 23rd annual Studio Tour on October 16 & 17 which is a self guided tour through approximately 40 participating studios around Allegany County, NY.  The various mediums of arts offered by the Artisans run the gamut from pottery to blacksmithing, woodcarving to jewelry and much more.  Visit www.alleganyartisans.com for more information on the studio tour.

This festival was surely a crowd pleaser and definitely worth the drive.  When you go next year, be sure to stop and see what we like to call "Cheese Lover's Heaven", better known as the Cuba Cheese Shop.

"Every part of this earth is sacred to my people.  Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing and humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people.  The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man".  -- excerpt of speech by Chief Seattle, 1854.

The Utenin Diahoga welcomed visitors and participants to this teaching powow.  The event, dubbed as "Gathering of All Nations" represented Native Americans from many different nations such as the Iroquois. Other nations were present as well, such as Shoshone, Mohawk, Seneca, and Cherokee.  Over 100 dancers participated in the grand entry ceremony while other activities took place.  Storytelling, Indian history, veteran's remembrance ceremony were a few of the activities taking place as some of the event onlookers took part in ceremonial dancing and prayer.

Native American artisans were featured with a variety of items such as jewelry, stained glass, dreamcatchers and other eye-catching handmade masks, pictures and pottery.picture of native american wardrobe
